Vehicle cargo areas are complex three-dimensional spaces shaped by contoured trim, wheel housings, sloping rooflines, and angled hatch glass. A simple length-by-width box calculation doesn’t reflect reality. Here is the standard methodology we follow when documenting and evaluating SUV cargo space.
1. Cargo Floor Length
Floor length determines whether long cargo—such as luggage, skis, or sleeping platforms—will fit with the rear hatch securely shut.
- Seats Up (Behind 2nd Row): Measured along the center of the cargo load floor, from the base of the rear seatbacks to the inner edge of the rear sill/latch plate.
- Seats Down (Behind 1st Row): Measured from the rear edge of the front center console or front seatbacks (set in a neutral, average driving position) to the inside of the closed tailgate.
2. Usable Width & The Wheel Well Pinch Point
Most SUVs boast maximum interior widths of 50 inches or more near the rear side windows. However, rigid cargo is always constrained by the narrowest point.
- Width Between Wheel Housings: The absolute minimum width measured across the cargo floor between the left and right interior wheel arch liners. This is the critical number for dog crates, coolers, and building materials.
- Maximum Floor Width: Measured in the pockets immediately behind the wheel arches near the tailgate opening.
3. Hatch Opening & Liftover Height
An item may fit inside the compartment once positioned, yet be impossible to load through the liftgate.
- Hatch Opening Width: We record both the lower threshold width and the widest midpoint of the aperture.
- Hatch Opening Height: The vertical distance measured at the centerline from the floor sill to the lowest point of the upper hatch seal.
- Liftover Height: The vertical distance from the ground to the bottom edge of the cargo opening at curb weight.
4. Sleeping & Level Floor Verification
Car campers frequently ask whether an SUV folds “flat.” In reality, many modern rear seats fold forward with a 5 to 15-degree upward incline or leave a pronounced step-up where the seat joins the cargo floor. We document:
- Whether the folded seatback forms a continuous surface or leaves a gap.
- Whether an incline exists that requires leveling pads for comfortable sleeping.
- Usable headroom from the top of the folded seatback to the headliner.
