For U.S. vehicles; figures from Subaru of America's media center and SUVLook's 2026 Outback profile, checked November 4, 2026. Subaru's own specs page loaded only as a navigation shell in our automated read, so every figure below comes from the Subaru press releases cited inline.

Short answer: the 2026 Subaru Outback is not offered with an Onyx Edition. Subaru's April 16, 2025 introduction release says the redesigned 2026 Outback comes in "Premium, Limited, Touring, Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness" trim levels. The August 21, 2025 pricing release prices the same lineup. Neither document mentions an Onyx. The Onyx Edition and Onyx Edition XT were 2025 Outback trims, and that is the car many "Subaru Outback Onyx" listings are really describing.

Does the 2026 Outback have an Onyx Edition?

Based on the two Subaru releases above, no. The 2026 Outback is a full redesign, and Subaru's lineup now has six trims: three with the 2.5-liter engine (Premium, Limited, Touring) and three with the 2.4-liter turbo (Limited XT, Touring XT, Wilderness). Our own 2026 Outback profile lists the same six trims and cites Subaru's 2026 specifications and trims page.

We could not read a Subaru statement that says "Onyx has been discontinued." What we can say is that Subaru's own announcement and pricing documents for the 2026 model year do not list one. If a dealer advertises a "2026 Outback Onyx Edition," ask for the window sticker and confirm the model year from the VIN. It may be a leftover 2025 vehicle or a listing error, and Subaru's releases give you no basis to assume otherwise.

What the Onyx Edition was on the 2025 Outback

Because shoppers still search for it, here is what Subaru's April 11, 2024 pricing release for the 2025 Outback said. These are 2025 facts and do not describe any 2026 model.

The 2026 Outback lineup that replaced it

Subaru's August 2025 pricing release gives these 2026 starting prices, with the $1,450 destination and delivery charge it lists for the U.S. (Alaska is $1,600):

2026 trim MSRP MSRP plus destination Engine
Premium $34,995 $36,445 2.5L, 180 hp
Limited $41,715 $43,165 2.5L, 180 hp
Touring $45,395 $46,845 2.5L, 180 hp
Limited XT $44,365 $45,815 2.4L turbo, 260 hp
Touring XT $47,995 $49,445 2.4L turbo, 260 hp
Wilderness $44,995 $46,445 2.4L turbo, 260 hp

The 2026 Premium is already well equipped. Subaru lists 18-inch wheels, a power rear gate, a 12.3-inch digital cluster, a 12.1-inch multimedia system, heated front seats, a 10-way power driver's seat and EyeSight Driver Assist as standard. Every 2026 Outback also has 8.7 inches of ground clearance, per the April 2025 release.

Which 2026 trim is closest to an Onyx?

No single 2026 trim is a one-for-one replacement, so match by what you liked about the Onyx.

  • If you wanted the lowest price: Premium. It starts at $34,995. Subaru's $2,270 Premium package adds rain-sensing wipers, navigation, a heated steering wheel, a moonroof and a wireless charger, bringing the listed price to $37,265. The heated steering wheel and moonroof overlap with what the 2025 Onyx bundled.
  • If you wanted black wheels: Limited. Subaru lists 18-inch matte black wheels on the 2026 Limited, along with perforated leather-trimmed upholstery, Harman Kardon speakers, a power moonroof, heated rear outboard seats and a heated steering wheel. It is $41,715, which is above the old Onyx price, but the equipment list is longer.
  • If you wanted the Onyx XT turbo: Limited XT. It adds the 260-hp engine, 19-inch black wheels, a surround-view monitor and dual exhaust outlets for $44,365.
  • If you wanted X-MODE and off-road capability: Wilderness. It has up to 9.5 inches of ground clearance, 17-inch wheels with Bridgestone Dueler tires, X-MODE with Hill Descent Control and electronically controlled dampers, at $44,995.

Compare these side by side in our Subaru Outback trim levels guide.

X-MODE on the 2026 Outback

The Onyx was marketed with dual-function X-MODE in 2025. For 2026, Subaru says all trims get a revised X-MODE system that can be toggled with a steering-wheel-mounted switch. You no longer need a special trim to get X-MODE; the Wilderness is the trim Subaru singles out for Hill Descent Control and the added ground clearance.

Engines and efficiency

The 2026 2.5-liter BOXER makes 180 hp and 178 lb-ft, compared with the 182 hp and 176 lb-ft Subaru listed for the 2025 Onyx. The 2.4-liter turbo makes 260 hp and 277 lb-ft and is available on XT models and exclusive to the Wilderness. All use a Lineartronic CVT with an 8-speed manual shift mode and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

According to the efficiency figures in our profile (Subaru's published estimates), 2.5-liter models are rated 25 city and 31 highway mpg, XT turbo models 21 city and 29 highway, and the Wilderness 21 city and 27 highway. For towing limits and the conditions Subaru attaches, see our Outback towing capacity guide.

Shopping tips if you want an "Onyx" look

  • Confirm the model year on the window sticker. A 2025 Onyx Edition and a 2026 Outback are different cars with different price lists.
  • Do not apply the 2025 prices above to a 2026 vehicle.
  • Compare out-the-door quotes that include the same destination charge. Subaru's 2026 release lists $1,450; the 2025 release listed $1,420.
  • If you are also weighing Subaru's smaller SUV, see our Outback vs Forester comparison.
  • For used 2025 Outbacks sold as an Onyx, check the equipment against the table above rather than relying on a listing title.

What we could not verify

Subaru's main specs page did not load as readable text, and its trim comparison PDF was unreadable to our tool. We therefore do not list per-trim details beyond what the press releases state. We also found no Subaru document announcing the end of the Onyx name, only its absence from the 2026 releases. Third-party listing sites may use Onyx wording differently.
