Honda lists seven U.S. 2026 Pilot grades: Sport, EX-L, TrailSport, Touring, Touring Blackout, Elite and Black Edition. Before comparing their extras, decide whether you need eight seats and whether AWD or trail hardware belongs on your must-have list. Then look at the comfort features you'd use every day. Specifications were checked September 30, 2026.

2026 Pilot trims and seating layout

Trim Published seating Key layout note
Sport 8 Entry trim
EX-L 8 Removable second-row center seat
TrailSport 7 Fixed second-row captain's-chair layout
Touring 8 Removable second-row center seat
Touring Blackout 8 Touring equipment with blackout package
Elite 8 Removable second-row center seat
Black Edition 8 Upper trim with black/red appearance details

Honda's 2026 Pilot specification table is especially useful because it keeps seating capacity and the removable second-row center seat tied to the exact trim.

TrailSport is the outlier: it seats seven with second-row captain's chairs. EX-L and the upper non-TrailSport grades listed above use Honda's removable center seat, allowing the second row to work as an eight-passenger bench or a more open seven-seat arrangement when the center section is removed and stored.

Sport versus EX-L: start with the seat and comfort needs

Our starting recommendation is EX-L for households that want the removable center seat and useful cabin upgrades; Sport remains the budget reference. Honda's features-by-trim guide lists EX-L additions including driver-seat memory, wireless charging, parking sensors and second-row sunshades.

Do not pay for the flexibility without testing it. Remove the center section, store it as Honda intends, then load the third row the way your household would use it. If you need three positions in row two every day, the removable feature may matter less than the bench itself.

The 2026 Pilot uses a 285-hp 3.5-liter V6 and 10-speed automatic across the lineup, so the trim decision is primarily about drivetrain, chassis hardware, seating and equipment rather than choosing between unrelated engines.

TrailSport: choose it for capability, not trim hierarchy

TrailSport is AWD-only and seats seven. Honda lists all-terrain tires, skid plates and a higher suspension among its changes. Choose it when those features serve your actual trips, and assess the road ride on the tires fitted to the vehicle you are considering.

It is not simply an EX-L with a higher badge. If you need eight seats, TrailSport is eliminated immediately. If you need the trail hardware, compare its tires, ride, ground-clearance needs and equipment against an AWD EX-L or Touring rather than treating the lineup as a straight luxury ladder.

Touring and Touring Blackout

Touring adds upper-level cabin and convenience equipment such as the Bose audio system and panoramic moonroof. Touring Blackout keeps the Touring basis and adds a factory blackout package with black exterior details and 20-inch black wheels.

That makes Touring Blackout an appearance decision layered on top of Touring equipment. Price the two on an otherwise comparable basis before assuming the blackout treatment adds functional value.

Elite versus Black Edition

Elite adds features aimed at comfort and driver convenience, including a head-up display and upgraded seat functions. Black Edition builds from Elite with black exterior accents and distinct interior appearance details.

For both, the practical question is whether those features improve daily ownership enough to justify the quote. Sit in the actual seats, try the ventilation and heating, inspect the visibility of the head-up display with your normal driving posture, and verify the exact equipment on the window sticker.

AWD and towing

Sport and EX-L can be configured with front-wheel drive or AWD, while TrailSport and the upper grades use AWD in Honda's 2026 table. Honda publishes 3,500 pounds for 2WD and 5,000 pounds for AWD when properly equipped.

Do not use the headline tow rating by itself. Check payload, passenger/cargo weight, tongue weight, hitch equipment and trailer-brake requirements for your exact vehicle and trailer.

How to choose the right Pilot trim

Start with seat count. If eight seats are mandatory, remove TrailSport from the list. If easy row-three access is more important and seven seats are enough, compare TrailSport with an eight-seat trim after removing its center seat.

Then choose drivetrain and compare cabin features. Touring earns a look for buyers who want both panoramic glass and premium audio. Elite is easier to justify when its front-seat ventilation and other comfort upgrades matter daily. Touring Blackout and Black Edition should be assessed for the appearance changes you actually want, alongside their underlying equipment.

Use the same family members, child restraints and cargo on both vehicles if possible. For wider alternatives, our three-row SUV buying guide compares different family layouts.

If five seats are enough and you are considering a two-row Honda instead, our 2027 Passport trim-level guide compares RTL, TrailSport and Elite without treating them as Pilot configurations.
