The U.S. 2026 Nissan Pathfinder has eight seats as standard, with seven-seat captain's-chair configurations available on Rock Creek, SL and Platinum. Its third row has a factory-published 28.0 inches of legroom. With that row occupied, Nissan lists 16.6 cubic feet for luggage. Those are the first numbers to consider if you need to carry people and bags together, rather than use the Pathfinder mainly as a five-seater.

The figures below describe the refreshed 2026 U.S. model, checked October 17, 2026. They come from Nissan, not an SUVLook cabin test. Start with the seating layout, then check space with your actual passengers before choosing upholstery or equipment.

Seven seats or eight: check the installed second row

U.S. 2026 grade Standard capacity Factory seven-seat option
SV 8 Not listed
Rock Creek 8 Premium Package with Captain's Chairs
SL 8 Premium Package with Captain's Chairs
Platinum 8 Captain's Chairs Package

A bench makes sense when the eighth seating position gets used. It also lets five people occupy the first two rows while the third row stays folded. With captain's chairs, those first two rows accommodate four. That simple seat count can matter more than an aisle if you regularly travel with five people and a lot of luggage.

Nissan describes a removable center console with its available captain's chairs. Try the route to row three with the console and seats in the arrangement you will use. Removing the console does not make the body larger or establish that every passenger can pass comfortably between the chairs.

Passenger dimensions and the moonroof difference

Factory-published measurement, inches Front Second row Third row
Legroom 44.3 35.5 28.0
Headroom without moonroof 42.3 39.6 37.8
Headroom with moonroof 41.1 38.4 37.8
Shoulder room 60.8 59.6 58.4

Set the driver first, settle row two next, and assess row three last. Check feet beneath the seat ahead, knee clearance and thigh support as well as head clearance. A demonstration with the second row pushed unusually far forward can hide the compromise between the rear rows.

The moonroof reduces published headroom in the first two rows. If a tall driver or passenger is close to the headliner, compare the actual roof configuration rather than another trim's showroom vehicle. The same seat count does not guarantee the same clearance.

Cargo space behind each row

Seats kept upright Factory-published cargo volume
All three rows 16.6 cubic feet
First and second rows 45.0 cubic feet
Front row only 80.5 cubic feet

For a seven-seater Pathfinder trunk-space question, begin with 16.6 cubic feet and bring the whole load: folded stroller, larger suitcase, smaller cases and the bag that usually gets added last. An object fitting on its own does not establish that it fits alongside everything else. Check the closed liftgate's clearance, including the sloping glass and projecting handles.

If row three usually stays folded, try that arrangement with second-row occupants in place. Leave their seatbacks and adjustment where they are comfortable, then check the remaining load area.

Cargo dimensions in inches: what Nissan actually publishes

The press kit supplies three useful linear measurements: 79.8 inches from the first row to the back door, 48.8 inches of wheelhouse width at the floor, and a maximum cargo height of 33.3 inches. Nissan's 2026 feature page also identifies a maximum floor area of 79.8 by 48.8 inches.

Keep those measurement names intact. They do not establish the depth behind an upright third row or a hatch opening 48.8 inches wide by 33.3 inches high. The maximum interior height is not necessarily the height through which a rigid item must pass. Nor is this a promise that a rectangular object filling all three published dimensions will fit.

For a crate, mobility device or furniture box, measure the opening and the complete loading path separately. Include handles, hinges and any rotation needed inside. Keep the driver in a usable driving position and verify that the gate closes freely. SUVLook has not verified an independent loading test or a sleeping-platform fit here.

Upholstery, screens and everyday controls

The 2026 refresh brings a standard 12.3-inch center touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the range. Nissan lists cloth on SV, cloth/leatherette on Rock Creek, TailorFit on SL and semi-aniline appointments on Platinum in its current comparison table. Do not assume the 2026 SL has the same upholstery specification as an older SL.

Try the controls you will use daily with the seat adjusted normally. Connect your phone, check the driver's display and have rear passengers reach their own controls. Optional equipment needs to be verified on the vehicle, not inferred from the model's advertising photograph.

For families using child restraints, consult the matching vehicle and restraint manuals before demonstrating sliding or tilting seats. Nissan markets its access system with specific conditions; that is not permission to move every seat with every restraint installed. Have the actual installation and access procedure checked where necessary.

What to compare before deciding

Choose the seat count first, test passenger fit second and load the usual luggage third. Only then compare the trim equipment. A comfortable driver's seat does not answer whether the third row works for your regular passenger, and a folded-seat photo cannot answer an all-seats-in-use luggage question.

For another cabin to assess with the same checklist, see our Honda Pilot interior guide and Toyota Highlander interior guide. They have their own year and configuration boundaries; none of their measurements should be substituted into this Pathfinder table.

Frequently asked questions

Does every 2026 Pathfinder seat seven?

No. Eight is standard in Nissan's current table. Seven seats require a specified captain's-chair configuration on Rock Creek, SL or Platinum. SV is listed with eight seats only.

How big is the trunk with the third row upright?

Nissan publishes 16.6 cubic feet. An exact load still needs an opening and depth check because volume does not define its usable shape.

Does the panoramic moonroof change headroom?

Yes. Nissan's 2026 table lists less front- and second-row headroom with the moonroof, while the third-row headroom figure remains unchanged.
