For U.S. vehicles; figures from Toyota's newsroom launch release for the 2026 RAV4, read November 4, 2026, plus SUVLook's 2026 RAV4 profile. Every 2026 RAV4 is a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, so there is no separate gas-only rating.
The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is rated up to 3,500 lb on the SE AWD, XLE Premium AWD and Woodland, while the LE AWD is rated 1,750 lb. Toyota's newsroom release ties each figure to a grade. If you searched for RAV4 hybrid towing capacity, the regular RAV4 lineup is hybrid, so these are the hybrid numbers.
2026 RAV4 towing capacity table
| 2026 RAV4 grade | Towing rating | Condition on Toyota's release |
|---|---|---|
| LE (hybrid) | 1,750 lb | AWD |
| SE (hybrid or plug-in hybrid) | 3,500 lb | AWD |
| XLE Premium (hybrid) | 3,500 lb | AWD |
| Woodland (hybrid or plug-in hybrid) | 3,500 lb | Drivetrain not stated in the release; the grade has standard AWD |
All four rows are from Toyota's 2026 RAV4 launch release. On the SE, the release gives 3,500 lb for AWD but does not say whether that applies to the hybrid, the PHEV or both, so check Toyota's brochure for your powertrain. The XSE, Limited and GR SPORT ratings are not listed in that release, and the Toyota 2026 RAV4 newsroom vehicle page we also opened had no towing figures, so we have not assigned a number to those grades.
SUVLook's RAV4 profile summarizes the same data as a 3,500-lb maximum on "specified AWD hybrid/PHEV grades" and a 1,750-lb lower rating for "FWD models and LE AWD." The FWD part comes from the profile, which we did not re-check today. Toyota's 2026 brochure is the document to confirm it against.
Hybrid versus plug-in hybrid
The profile lists a 2.5L four-cylinder hybrid system with 226 hp net combined in FWD form and 236 hp in AWD form, plus a 324-hp plug-in hybrid with AWD as standard. The plug-in's higher output does not by itself change the towing figure: Toyota's release shows 3,500 lb for the Woodland, which comes as both hybrid and PHEV, and for the SE AWD.
Plug-in pricing sits well above the regular hybrid in the profile: PHEV SE starts at $41,500 against $34,700 for the Hybrid SE, both before dealer charges. If towing is your reason for choosing a PHEV, the rating alone does not justify the price step because 3,500 lb is also listed for hybrid grades such as the XLE Premium ($36,100) and Woodland ($39,900).
Which grade should a tow buyer look at?
The profile's trim list helps frame the decision:
| Grade | Starting MSRP | Drivetrain | Towing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hybrid LE | $31,900 | FWD available | 1,750 lb (AWD per Toyota) |
| Hybrid SE | $34,700 | FWD or AWD | 3,500 lb (AWD) |
| Hybrid XLE Premium | $36,100 | FWD or AWD | 3,500 lb (AWD) |
| Hybrid Woodland | $39,900 | AWD | 3,500 lb |
Prices are Toyota's starting MSRPs and exclude dealer processing and handling, taxes, options and dealer charges. The Woodland adds a 2-inch rear tow hitch receiver with a wiring harness as grade equipment, according to Toyota's release. Other grades list different towing equipment, so ask what is physically on the vehicle you are buying.
If you plan to tow anything near 3,500 lb, look at the AWD SE, XLE Premium or Woodland and confirm the rating on the specific vehicle's label. The LE and FWD ratings are lower, so the first filter is the grade and drivetrain, not the engine.
What the number means in practice
A rating is the most a loaded trailer may weigh, not the trailer's advertised dry weight. Add cargo, water, propane and batteries before comparing. Two other limits also apply:
- Tongue weight counts against the vehicle's passenger-and-cargo capacity. Our profile has no published RAV4 tongue-weight or payload figure, so we do not give one.
- Braked versus unbraked trailers. The release states single ratings per grade without a trailer-brake split. Whether a trailer needs brakes is a matter for the owner's manual and local rules.
SUVLook does not give hitch-installation steps. Have a dealer or qualified installer fit towing equipment, and use the owner's manual and door-jamb label as the final authority.
How the RAV4 compares with rivals
| SUV (2026) | Published towing | Condition in SUVLook profile | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota RAV4 | 3,500 lb; 1,750 lb on lower-rated grades | 3,500 lb on specified AWD grades | Toyota Newsroom |
| Honda CR-V | 1,500 lb gas; 1,000 lb hybrid | By powertrain | Honda Information Center |
| Subaru Forester | 1,500 lb most trims; 3,500 lb Wilderness | Properly equipped | Subaru |
| Ford Escape | 3,500 lb | 2.0L with tow package | Ford |
| Nissan Rogue | 1,500 lb | Properly equipped | Nissan Newsroom |
At 3,500 lb the RAV4's best grades match the Forester Wilderness and the Escape with its tow package, and they are well above the CR-V and Rogue. The LE's 1,750 lb is still above those two rivals' ratings. Head-to-head pages: RAV4 vs CR-V, RAV4 vs Forester, RAV4 vs Escape and RAV4 vs Rogue. The wider class is on our SUV towing capacity chart.
A pre-purchase checklist for RAV4 towing
Towing ratings on the RAV4 depend on grade and drivetrain, so a few checks in the right order save trouble. The owner's manual holds the binding limits.
- Confirm the grade and drivetrain. The 3,500-lb figures in Toyota's release are for SE AWD, XLE Premium AWD and Woodland. The LE AWD figure is 1,750 lb. FWD models are covered by the lower rating in SUVLook's profile.
- Check whether your grade has a published number. Toyota's release does not list towing for the XSE, Limited or GR SPORT. If you are shopping one of those, ask Toyota or the dealer for the written rating before you buy a trailer.
- Get the trailer's loaded weight. Use the trailer's gross weight with cargo, water, propane and batteries, or a scale reading, not the dry weight.
- Ask what hitch is installed. The Woodland lists a 2-inch rear tow hitch receiver with a wiring harness as grade equipment. For other grades, have the dealer say exactly what is on the vehicle and what would need to be added.
- Read the manual and door-jamb label. Tongue weight and passenger-and-cargo limits are there.
One practical point: the plug-in hybrid carries a substantial battery system, but we have no published curb weight or payload for it in our profile, so we make no claim about how that affects loading. Look at the label on the actual vehicle.
