For a 2024–2025 RAV4, start with 40 inches of cargo depth behind the rear seats and 39.4 inches of minimum width from Toyota's published specifications. Those are the useful planning dimensions for a folded stroller or a rectangular load on the floor.

Be careful with Toyota's 59-inch maximum width. It describes a wider part of the cargo bay, not the narrowest space at floor level. A 58-inch-wide cabinet therefore isn't a confirmed fit. The 2024 brochure also lists up to 36.6 inches of cargo height on applicable configurations; check where your load will sit, not just the largest dimension.

A 2026 RAV4 is a different generation. Toyota's current comparison data uses its own figures, so that model has a separate section below.

2024–2025 RAV4 trunk dimensions in inches

Toyota's 2024 brochure gives a more useful set of cargo measurements than most manufacturers publish.

Cargo measurement Published figure Best use
Length behind rear seat 40.0 in Strollers, cases and boxes with rear seats in use
Minimum cargo width 39.4 in Rigid items that must sit low on the floor
Maximum cargo width 59.0 in Soft bags and loads that can use wider upper/side areas
Minimum cargo height 34.5 in Conservative vertical reference on many configurations
Maximum cargo height 36.6 in Tallest published vertical figure on applicable configurations

2024–2025 Toyota RAV4 cargo length, width and height

For rigid cargo, 39.4 inches is the number to circle. The 59-inch maximum width sounds impressive, but it does not mean a 58-inch-wide rectangular object will fit flat between the wheel housings.

The 40-inch seats-up length is also genuinely useful because it answers a common everyday question: how much floor depth is left when passengers are using the second row?

Toyota says 40.0 inches; a tape measurement says 39.25

SteadyHome reports a physical measurement of 39.25 inches behind the upright rear seats on a 2019–2025 RAV4. Toyota publishes 40.0 inches.

A difference of three-quarters of an inch is easy to ignore until the box you're buying is 39.5 inches deep.

Use Toyota's number for broad vehicle comparisons. For a close-fit product, trust a same-endpoint measurement of the exact vehicle. Cargo liners, floor position and where the tape meets the seatback can all move the result slightly.

That is not a contradiction so much as a reminder that “factory dimension” and “what my tape reads in this car” are not always identical questions.

2026 RAV4 cargo dimensions: a different generation

Toyota calls the 2026 RAV4 all-new, and it starts the sixth generation. The lineup also shifts to electrified powertrains.

Toyota's current comparison page displays the following figures for the shown 2026 configuration:

2026 Toyota figure Value
Cargo capacity 37.8 cu ft
Cargo capacity, rear seat down 69.8 cu ft
Cargo-area length 37.8 in
Cargo-area width 60.5 in

Those numbers are useful, but 60.5 inches should not be read as “width between the wheel wells” unless Toyota labels it that way. It is a cargo-area width field, not automatically the narrowest rectangular floor width.

The model-year cutoff matters more than the small numerical changes. A 2025 dimension article that quietly extends its numbers into 2026 is now unreliable because the body changed.

How big is the RAV4 trunk opening?

Toyota's published 2024 cargo dimensions describe the space inside the cargo area. They do not give a complete rectangular liftgate-opening width and height.

For dog crates, appliances and mobility devices, that distinction can decide whether the item loads at all. An object can fit once it is inside and still be too wide or too tall to pass through the opening.

For a rigid item, measure four things:

  • the narrowest opening width;
  • the opening height at the same plane;
  • the minimum floor width where the item will rest;
  • the interior height where the item sits with the hatch closed.

The 59-inch maximum cargo width is not a substitute for any of those opening measurements.

How long is a RAV4 with the seats down?

For the fifth-generation 2024–2025 RAV4, Toyota gives us a clean 40-inch length behind the rear seats, but the cited factory table does not provide the full folded-seat floor length in the same way.

So if your question is “will I sleep in it?” or “will a bicycle fit with the hatch closed?”, measure the folded configuration directly.

Set the driver's seat where you actually drive, fold the second row and measure from the closed-hatch plane to the front-seatback. Then repeat at the height of the mattress or cargo. A low object may gain space underneath a seatback that a taller object cannot use.

For camping, you can take a second parked measurement with the front seats moved forward. Keep that separate from the driving configuration.

RAV4 cargo space in cubic feet

Toyota lists 37.6 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 69.8 cubic feet with the rear seat down for the 2025 fifth-generation model in its comparison tool.

For the displayed 2026 configuration, Toyota lists 37.8 cubic feet seats up and 69.8 cubic feet seats down.

Toyota RAV4 cargo-volume comparison

The tiny change from 37.6 to 37.8 cubic feet is much less important than the generation change itself. If you're buying a crate or building a platform, the linear dimensions and exact body matter more than two-tenths of a cubic foot.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid notes

Do not assume every RAV4 powertrain has identical vertical clearance. Toyota's fifth-generation brochure shows different cargo-height values for some electrified configurations, and the 2026 packaging changes again.

For luggage, these differences may be irrelevant. For a tall crate, fitted drawer or mobility ramp, match the figure to the exact grade and powertrain.

RAV4 cargo dimensions by model year

A RAV4 article becomes much more useful once the years are grouped by generation instead of pretending every model uses one set of numbers.

2024 and 2025

Both are fifth-generation models. Toyota publishes the 40.0-inch seats-up length and 59.0-inch maximum width; the 2024 brochure also supplies the 39.4-inch minimum width and height range.

2021, 2022 and 2023

These are also fifth-generation RAV4s. Toyota's 2022 brochure shows the same headline 40.0-inch length, 39.4/59.0-inch width figures and 34.5/36.6-inch height range on applicable configurations.

That makes the factory table a useful generation reference, though exact powertrain and trim still matter for height and volume.

2019 and 2020

These are the first years of the same fifth-generation body. For a fitted product, verify the exact-year brochure or measure the vehicle before cutting or ordering anything.

2013–2018

These are fourth-generation RAV4s. Do not copy the newer 39.4/59.0/40.0-inch table backward into them.

2026

New sixth-generation body. Use the dedicated 2026 section above.

Using the RAV4 dimensions for a real load

A 39-inch-wide box leaves little margin

Against the 39.4-inch minimum-width figure, a 39-inch box leaves only 0.4 inch total on paper. Packaging, handles and a liner can consume that margin. Test the actual load before treating the brochure as a fit guarantee.

Stroller depth is only the first check

The 40-inch seats-up length helps screen a folded stroller. Check its thickest section too: a handle or wheel higher above the floor may meet the hatch sooner than its base does. Load it before deciding how many suitcases can go beside it.

Measure before cutting a sleeping platform

A nominal 38-inch-wide twin looks promising against the 39.4-inch width, but that comparison establishes neither a 75-inch usable length nor a level surface. Measure the folded floor with the front seats positioned for sleeping.

Compare the same measurements in our Honda CR-V and Subaru Outback cargo guides.
